Shark at the beach!
I saw a shark while I was standing on the beach at Powerhouse in Del Mar. I'm 99% sure.
It was about 50ft off the shore, but I'm terrible with distance. It felt really close! It was behind the line of surfers and I was in up to my knees so I didn't feel threatened, but my stomach dropped.
I saw this dark shadow, LARGE, like a car large, moving through a breaker. Then I saw a dorsal fin. I've been waiting to see a shark at the beach for my whole life. I've been watching for that fin.
Then I saw dolphins!
Oh, phew! It's dolphins, not a shark, how adorable! Kids! Kids, come look! The boys had been digging and we ran along the beach and out into the shallows to see better. It was a pod of dolphins arching, breaching? They were having fun! And they were excited. I even watched three dolphins go surfing inside a wave. It was awesome.
But then...I saw a really big, black "dolphin" jump and twist up out of the water and land on it's back. According to every Shark Week documentary, and, yes, Jaws movie I've ever seen... that's how a f@#king shark eats! And it's the great whites who like to eat our sting rays and seals.
I watched for another 10 minutes and the animals moved on. No one else seemed to be paying attention and I did yell DOLPHINS! People were very oblivious.
We don't go too deep into the water. 3 ft or less, but sometimes Liam goes a little deeper. I like to keep a line of surfers between me and the briny blue. I tend to think the sharks will get full on surfers and we'll be safe. But now, I'm not so sure my marine animal logic is sound science. Oh sharks don't want to come into the breakers...but they will if that's where the food is!
I didn't have my camera as I was IN THE WATER with the sharks, but it was wild. No news coverage today so I may have seen a big dolphin. But my gut tells me it was a shark.
Wiiiiiiiild!
