Vacation Part Deux - Above the Snow Line
We had to pack up and head home today. It was a sad morning. We learned my father had passed away this morning after his long struggle with cancer.
(I have chosen not to tell the boys yet which is why they are blessedly oblivious and enjoying the day.)
Needing a distraction, and having promised Liam some mineral shopping, I impulsively chose Idyllwild as a pit stop. It has lots of shopping, I said. We'll get some lunch. I did not realize that we were headed to 6000 ft above sea level the day after a substantial snow storm!
Here we go, realizing, huh, we're heading pretty high up into this mountain we've been staring at through palm trees all week. Yup, San Jacinto, the second highest peak in Southern California.
And boom! Tons of snow! Mind you, I have the kids dressed in shorts and tennis shoes.
Onward to the Mile High Café, we decided! That's snow blowing off the roof.
Tuckered out DJ.
Cubby was ecstatic and then pissed that there was snow and that I wouldn't let him play in it. We ended up in town on the day of both the tree lighting and an Arts Festival! It was a great time but bonkers! We slipped and slopped through traffic clogged streets, dodging actual snowball fights and dogs wearing ugly Christmas sweaters.
Liam and I found some treasures and I bought people dry socks at the western wear outpost. Jacob found a treasure, but I think he already forgot about it. Snow is very distracting. For me, too.
Coming down the gigantic mountain that I accidentally dragged my family over we saw a car that had just been crushed under a boulder! Thank you, minivan, for not flying off the road.
It was magical and I stand by impulsive decisions. I think we found our next vacation destination! But we'll bring boots. And tire chains.
