I hope that you remember this day
Dear Jacob,
On December 1st we went to see your first play, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! We went to the Olde Globe Theater at Balboa Park for a children's presentation of the play. It was so special for many reasons: it was time for just the two of us, it was a musical play and I think that you're going to be our "theater" kid, and it was a special performance for families of children with special needs.
You were so excited to be in a theater someplace that you've only occasionally been to see movies with your brother, but this time, we were surrounded by other kids and parents who wouldn't be mad if you kicked their chair or called out in excitement or pointed and waved in your joy. I am tearful just thinking about the extra volunteers who were ready to gift you a fidgit toy as we entered and who were on hand with a booster seat. The director made a speech before the play that he hoped that each child would be able to enjoy the play in whatever way they felt most comfortable.
Mostly, I felt so grateful that, as I looked around at the other children, I realized how blessed we were, to be there together and that my child was truly happy.
During the curtain call, your eyes glittered as the Who children and parents took bows, and you said, "I want to be in a play and I can be the kid and YOU can be my mom!"
That's all I want, to be your mom.
I love you, Cubby Bear.
Your Mama
