So! Annoyed!!
I have been taking Liam to a specialist for his reflux issues for the past, well, since he was born. The pedi sends me off to this GI doc who is actually really nice but has me jumping through all kinds of hoops with my diet, different meds, gripe water, the whole nine yards. I was really hopeful about today's appointment that the doc would say, yup, Liam is doing great and you shouldn't have to have him on meds for too much longer. (he's on Pepcid now) Well, the doc is out of town and I get his nurse who I think had a major attitude with me. I know that I'm tired and sensitive about my kid and how I mother him. So MAYBE I was overreacting to much of what she said and how she said it. But she was a damn bitch (sorry, couldn't help myself)!! She was suggesting that even though Liam is consistently gaining an ounce a day that I should try the elimination diet again (no dairy, eggs, meat) AND put him on Gaviston liquid in addition to the meds and gripe water. She also had the gall to suggest that if I wasn't going to change my diet that I should consider giving him formula. And if all that doesn't eliminate the issue, then we might have to have him get an upper GI. Um. No way!
Both the pedi and the specialist called Liam a "happy spitter" which basically means what we have is more of a laundry issue than a medical one. Chris and I discussed it and we feel like he's just growing up and his little body is maturing. At four months we are considering taking him off the meds and seeing if this was all colic. The nurse had also remarked that his cradle cap is a sign of food allergies. Please! Mommy and Daddy both have eczema so it would follow that Liam would have some skin issues. Plus, don't most babies have cradle cap? I think that people are WAY too quick to jump on the food allergy train. GAWD!!! I'm just so annoyed at the whole "specialist" field and thinking that they just want me forking over co-pays and buying medication for a year when he'll just mature and grow out of all of this. He is already so much better in the colic department and is generally a really happy baby now. I feel like this is another perfect example of how the medical profession tries to strong arm parents to support their pharmaceutical cohorts. Cue melodramatic music!
